Family values groups have branded the exhibition “irresponsible” – saying children could be mentally scarred by seeing such images. Dr Adrian Rogers, chairman of the campaign group Family Focus said: “Failing to impose an age limit of 18 on such a piece is highly irresponsible.

“The artists and the Tate are obviously aiming to shock people with the pornographic content of this exhibition without thinking of the consequences.

The museum, opened in 1987, in a renovated boat craft shop in Pilsen's Harrison Park decided to do some status-seeking as its 20th anniversary approachs. Carlos Tortolero, its president and, said that, if anything, the name change is overdue.

“No one would argue that we're No. 1″ as a Latino arts organization, he said in an interview last week in the museum. “As a Mexican institution, no one rivals us.”

The mission of the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum is to stimulate and preserve knowledge and appreciation of Mexican culture through sponsoring events and exhibitions that exemplify the rich variety of visual and performing arts in the Mexican culture; to develop a significant permanent collection of Mexican art; to encourage the professional development of Mexican artists; and to offer arts education programs.

The Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum is the nation's largest Latino arts institution and the only Latino museum accredited by the American Association of Museums.

Art historians have classified Spanish painting between El Greco and Goya, maintaining that 20th-century avant-garde movements such as Cubism and Surrealism—Pioneered by artists of Spanish origin—broke completely with the traditions that preceded them. Today we have enough perspective to see that, despite their revolutionary aesthetic leaps, the great artists of the early 20th century were inspired by traditional models that were, in essence, local in character.

Where every room was decorated by a renown artist. Every room is an original, and all rooms are only united by the high artistic standards with which the concepts were carried out. Sculptures in the lobby and philosophy in the stairwell accompany guests throughout the hotel.

This has been made possible by over 50 artists who accepted the hotel's invitation to make a contribution. In designing different rooms artists have created scenarios that go beyond their work in the studio and reflect on the time, place, and situation of the traveler. The entire room is taken into consideration, usually including the furniture and other decorations.

The artists receive approx. 5% of the profit from “their” room as payment – a so-called artist obolus – a one-time compensation for materials and other costs, and a number of free overnight stays.
